Is It Hot in Here? Keeping Warehouses Cool

Due to the size of most warehouses, the cost of air-conditioning is through the roof which is why most warehouses are not air-conditioned and with the sun beating down on metal roofs, the heat can be unbearable. Heat doesn’t just make workers uncomfortable, but it adds to their fatigue and exhaustion. In severe cases, it could even cause heatstroke.

Although OSHA recommends an internal temperature of 68-78 degrees, this is not a strict requirement and is often not realistic in warehouse environments. The 6 main heat-related concerns listed by OSHA are as follows:

  1. Heat stroke causes the body’s temperature regulation system to fail
  2. Heat exhaustion can cause headaches and nausea
  3. Heat cramps caused by sweating
  4. Heat collapse due to loss of oxygen to the brain
  5. Heat rash created by sweat that doesn’t evaporate
  6. Heat fatigue that impacts motor and mental functions

Most companies try to protect their employees from the heat with fans, temperature breaks, insulation, and other methods but sometimes you just can’t beat the heat. Not only do you have to worry about the health of your employees during these times but also their safety. Productivity slows when employees are exhausted and not focused, which can lead to workplace accidents.

ALERT Safety Products has several solutions that can help keep your employees safe with proactive, smart-trigger technology. Our Project ALERT flashes a customized warning image when forklifts approach an intersection to wake up those exhausted pedestrian employees. Also, there are no concerns over peeling tape or paint due to humidity or extreme heat.

The dome Mirror ALERT has sensors that detect approaching forklift traffic, turning a passive mirror into an active alarm. Our Dome Mirror ALERT is available with an optional flashing LED floor spotlight too. Office ALERT is a 10˝ x 6˝—Small LED display for offices and doorways to warn pedestrians of approaching forklifts before they step into the active Forklift aisle.  ALERT Safety Products is constantly developing new products with innovative technology to keep your warehouse employees alert and safe!

Protecting your employees is our only business and we truly believe that active ALERT Safety Products are the solution to improved workplace safety by turning passive safety products into active alarms.
